Nikon D3X and Nikon D3H

And so some people abroad have gotten to test the new Nikon prototypes or test subjects to find out professionals' opinions. Nikon distributes prototypes to selected professionals to get feedback which they further use for camera improvement before releasing to market. And so here are the prototypes at the moment.

Nikon D3X

Nikon D3X is unequivocally a studio fullframe camera, for which the main things are comfort of working in studio, resolution and additional features that can be used only in studio work. And so what the Nikon D3X has:
  • 17.9 megapixels (remember this is only a prototype)
  • Frame rate 4 FPS
  • Only RAW or TIFF (no JPG)
  • ISO 12-640 (Boost: 800 and 1200)
  • RAW Recording mode available in 14-Bit, 16-Bit and 24-Bit
  • Manual Focus Split Prism
  • Nikon Multi-CAM3500 FX II
  • Accepts UDMA Compact Flash Cards
  • Built in flash meter
  • Shutter Speed 120s to 1/2000s
  • Wireless Transmitter built-In for image transfer
  • Auto sensor cleaning unit installed
  • Flash X-Sync up to 1/1000s
  • Approximate price 6500$ (Nikon D3 currently is 5000$)

For now it's a prototype and some things may change or expand. The camera will unfortunately only be announced in July 2009.

Nikon D3H

Nikon D3H will be a reportage fullframe camera, whose main trump card will be speed and good photo quality at high ISO. And so D3H features:
  • 8.4 megapixels in FX mode and 4.2 megapixels in DX Crop mode
  • ISO 25-12800 (25600 and 51200 with boost)
  • Frame rate 11 FPS in FX and 14 FPS in DX Crop
  • Nikon Multi-CAM3500 FX II
  • Max shutter speed 1/16000
  • 3D Matrix metering III mode
  • Larger Buffer Size : 440JPEG, 220 RAW
  • Auto sensor cleaning unit installed
  • 10% Larger AF Area in FX
  • RAW Recording mode available in 12-Bit, 14-Bit and 16-Bit
  • Pocketwizard Transceiver upgrade available (D3H only)
  • Flash X-sync up to 1/500
  • Built-in radio frequency available for Nikon Creative Lighting System

Approximate price will be 4000$. I suppose that soon a new Nikon flash system will also appear, which will be based on radio signal transmission, not on IR signals and flash signals. All that's left is to wait and save money!

yes. that D3X not only has the convenience to work in studio, but also often lacks convenience for working not in studio.

Well, as a D2Xs user I'll have what to choose... :) Although the middle path is already D3...

Dunno, if they'll quickly release that D3H and at what price - because it becomes a competitor to their own D300 that just came out. But if it will be - it would be the perfect body for my needs.

Judging by this line

"RAW Recording mode available in 14-Bit, 16-Bit and 24-Bit"

The D3X is a great studio camera, and it still has to be remembered that it has a 35mm sensor equivalent, not 36.7 x 49.0 mm like medium format :)

Isn't that D3H terribly short on pixels if we're discussing Mpix here?

I think that it's only a matter of time until Nikon catches up to Mark in pixels! Already currently d3 is much superior to 1Ds III in high ISO quality!

yeah that's the same. wait until the real devices come out, these are only prototypes.

It says "auto self sensor cleaning unit" there, or is that something else???

Still no sensor cleaner.. but most importantly, megapixels too low for a studio camera. I think that Mark 1Ds will be a big step ahead and that's not too good news.
