Photo Equipment Repair

Sometimes accidents happen when a camera falls and a lens breaks or worse - the camera itself. The warranty has expired, and the only option is to bring the camera for repair. And there are cases when repair costs almost as much as a new purchase. This time I'll tell about photo equipment repair options. Compiled several repair masters.

Main Photo Services

The first thing I recommend is to inquire at the original company's service branch in case of accident, to at least find out the price from which you'll have to part with to get the broken item repaired.

Nikon representative service in Latvia is:
Baltic Service Center SIA, Brīvības Gatve 201, LV-1039, Rīga, Latvia
For service questions call: +371 67070520
http://www.nikon.lv/lv_LV/footers/contacts.page
The service is located next to Elkor Plaza and is part of Elkor Service group. From what I've researched they almost nothing repairs here, but send to Estonia or even further. Therefore you won't find out repair costs immediately, and you'll have to pay a sending fee. Later they'll call you and say how much the repair will cost and whether you agree. From my experience I've used it several times and I'm very satisfied. Highest class for the highest price :) That's what you have to reckon with. As an example I can mention 3500 Ls expensive camera shutter replacement ~600 Ls. Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8, which costs 1100 Ls, fell and broke in half - repair price 800 Ls.

Canon representative office:

Repair Masters

Compiled several photo equipment masters in Riga:
I'll be grateful if you share your experience with repairs and masters in the comments.

Ivars Vībe
http://www.bng.lv/foto_remonts
Aristīda Briāna iela 12
Tel. 67277026
Mob. Tel. 29243574
Repairs any photo equipment, from Zenit to Bronika.
Colleagues recommended. Very fast if you need to hurry, workshop is clean and tidy.
My experience was quite the opposite. For 1.5 years now a lens has been in repair. But that's thanks to the fact that what others refuse to do, he can take.

Ilgvars Nagla
Mob. tel. 29246307
Kr.Barona 78
Repairs any photo equipment.
Entrance from the courtyard side, behind the sauna.

Egils Hāzners
Tel.: 29102877
Repairs all brands of lenses, as well as cameras, except film cameras.
Worked at Canon center, hence different experience than Ivars and Ilgvars

Gaļina
Tel:. 29631060
Works at Canon warranty repair - Mūksalas iela.
Supposedly repairs only Canon, but has fixed both similar and other brand photo equipment.
From colleagues: had repairs done at Gaļina's, wasn't super fast but fixed everything (drowned Sigma 135-400 and Oly's native 50-200(broken zoom mechanism bearings)).
There have also been bad reviews about her.

Grigorjevs
Tel.: 26109636
Mainly fixes only Canon lenses and cameras, if it's not very difficult problem and parts are needed, then can also do Nikon and Sigma.
As he himself says, it doesn't make sense to repair film cameras, because parts are expensive and you have to wait long.

Eduards Tukišs
Tel.: 29468390
Fixes all kinds of lenses. SLR cameras, except Nikon. Not film cameras, because can't get parts.
Colleagues' lenses he fixed very well - the bayonet was broken. Everything was restored.

Also share your experience, how it went with any of these masters or some other.

Canon PowerShot SX270 20x Optical Zoom. It sits quietly on the table by the computer. One morning, I wanted to zoom in on a crow puddle from the 4th floor balcony - didn't work. When I finally managed to move the zoom, it quickly went to the end and then immediately returned to the starting position, it couldn't be stopped or adjusted. The camera is neither cracked nor hit. Maybe it hasn't been used for a long time (approx. 2 weeks)? Is it possible to repair that zoom to be able to adjust the distance again? The problem - my health doesn't allow me to go out, so contact only by email, but if there's an opportunity, I'll arrange for someone to take it/bring it. Thanks!

Hi! I have a Nikon D60 and the "start" button doesn't work, the screen shows errors, I think a small gear is the culprit, something is blocking it, I sent it for repair but they said they couldn't fix it, so I'm looking for a good master who could take a look and fix it. Can you recommend someone who does quality work, fairly quickly and at reasonable prices?
40.Ilgvars Nagla  2017-04-29 19:15:55

This is the current list of repair services: BNG.LV - Ivars Vibe, Briana 12 (repairs Canon, Nikon and others) BFS.LV "Baltijas Foto Serviss" - P. Brieza 3 (largest service - repairs only Canon) IBSERVISS.LV - official Canon service in LV.

At Briana Street they delivered a repainted spot that was patchy and dusty; they said it was not included in the price. Another disappointment was when the lens was visibly tilted, but the master refused to see it until the other one still looked at it and agreed with what was said.
37.Igors  2016-03-23 15:26:12
About the master from A. Briana Street 12: good, quality and fast repair. Thanks for HELIOS 44M!

Can anyone recommend a repair master for a flash??? I ordered from the MEIKE online store, it arrived quickly, but after 700 flashes it died. MEIKE went silent about the warranty and so on... I sent it to China twice and both times the flash came back unopened. I do not recommend MEIKE to anyone - a scam outfit!!!

Well HAZNER - that is not serious! Maybe once he could fix something, but now he is about 15 years behind in repair technologies (not even mentioning lens and camera calibration and programming). Unambiguously, the strongest photo repair shop at the moment is on Briana Street 12 (Ivars Vibe).
34.Blondīne  2015-02-24 19:50:08
I will add that the whole process dragged on for several months. And I apologize for the grammar mistakes.
33.Blondīne  2015-02-24 19:47:11
Egils Hazners. In short. At first he made a good impression, but when we got to real work the communication became very strange. He did a check and concluded that the lens needs to be replaced. Ok. He said he had replaced the lens with a new one, but scratched, but that you could still photograph without problems. Those who think a scratched lens does not work do not understand anything about physics! He asked for 80 eur for that. Ok, I am blonde already, I do not understand physics... But I said I want a new and unscratched one! With a heavy heart he agreed and promised to replace it with a new one. I thought - we understood each other, but - nothing! Something like a nightmare started. Then he disappeared; when I called, the lens was already bought, but supposedly lost, needed to be patched up and then - immediately fixed, it is only 2 hours of work, nothing. Ok, these things happen. I wait, again nothing, I call, it will be right there, nothing. Suddenly on Christmas Eve a furious message - "I need money tomorrow!" In that tone... I say, the work will be done, there will be money, I left an expensive camera, that is enough guarantee. He would not give in and wanted me to pay all the money upfront. Keep in mind - there will be 100% prepayment. The nightmare continued for another month or so, I even had to write to his wife. I demanded the camera back and, thank God, he returned it without a fight. I received the same scratched lens for free, only 20 eur for diagnosis. I have to say - whatever the laws of physics, I have not managed to take a single sharp photo. Even in bright daylight photographing a landscape, it comes out blurry. I am glad I did not pay those 80 eur!

I can recommend one electrician, who has fixed several studio flashes for me that other masters couldn't. Aleksejs Jegorovs tel 26857917
31.Juris  2015-01-07 13:28:24
At Aristida Briana Street 12 there are 2 masters. One is technician Ivars Vina, who is excellent at his job, but the other is an electrician. I can say the electrician is their weakest link, with mediocre knowledge. Several things I brought he could not fix, but other masters could!
30.shop  2014-12-08 22:33:18
Got sand in the lens, is it even repairable?
29.Mārtiņš  2014-11-26 10:09:03
IVARS VIBE has progressed surprisingly in recent times. As far as Canon repairs go, superb! He adjusted the focus of my Canon 5D Mark II with a couple of lenses in 2 days. I saw clients bringing fairly new and professional cameras for diagnostics and repair ... I recommend him! From my experience, only 2 notable photo equipment services are left - "Canon" on Mukusalas Street and BNG (Ivars Vibe) on A. Briana Street 12. P.S. ILGVARS NAGLA no longer works there, he is apparently retired.
28.Mārcis  2014-10-30 14:46:45
I. Nagla is good, but you have to wait a long time. The solution is to keep calling constantly so it does not get postponed :) Ed. Tukiss fixed the Nikon lens.
27.edgars  2014-10-22 23:51:14
On Briana Street they fixed a Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 for 70 Ls after it had been dropped on concrete. It was bent and neither the zoom nor the focus would turn. Now everything has been working for a year.
26.andreart  2014-10-15 14:05:22
another repair link

Ilgvars Nagla fixed my Nikon within a week for a very reasonable price! Not to mention his friendly attitude, I definitely recommend.
23.Modris  2013-09-10 23:36:24
I took my Sony camera to Elkor for repair, they said it needed to be sent to France, supposedly the matrix needed to be changed, they fixed it for free because they admitted their fault, which would have cost me 100 Ls
22.Edijs  2013-07-31 10:22:45
Ivars is the real deal, Canon official is a complete mess and prices 10 times higher.
21.Leina  2013-07-31 07:37:09
After reading the positive reviews here about I. Vibe's shop on Briana Street, I decided to trust them with my Canon 50mm 1.4 with a stuck focusing mechanism (which, as far as I understand, is a common problem with this particular lens). 3 days in service and 45Ls later, the lens was ceremoniously 'introduced' to my new 6D. The joy lasted exactly 3 FRAMES before the lens collapsed again with exactly the same fault! I was in Latvia only briefly, got the lens back on the evening before flying away (which the workshop had been informed about), and I can only blame myself for not checking everything more seriously in the rush. Out of interest, I came back and re-read the reviews here again - and it does start to look a little like self-promotion. If anyone else is looking for advice - go to an official service center, not to such 'masters'.
20.Kristaps  2013-04-04 14:29:25
Had to change the lens glass for a Nikon lens. Nobody wanted to bother. Why should I buy a new lens? I searched all of Riga until I came to Ivars Vibe. Fixed it within two days, for a very reasonable fee. A real master. All the best!!!
19.Andrejs  2013-03-31 12:54:04
For my Nikon D80 shutter, the masters here advised sending it to Estonia, because apparently no one here can repair it with original parts...
18.Laura  2013-03-28 20:50:00
The screws and related things on the lens had gone by the wayside. Repair at I. Vibe cost 25Ls + 3 months warranty. I think that is reasonable.
17.артур  2013-02-26 23:19:29
Good day.

I have the following question. On my Nikon D3000 the protective little glass has come off, and now all the photographs are overexposed. I hope you understand what I mean. I would like to know the repair price. If it is not clear what I mean, please write to me and I will send a photograph marking exactly what has broken (it is not possible to send you a photograph through the site).
16.Ivars  2013-02-02 22:21:45
Unfortunately the Sony Alpha 200 lens repaired at BNG on A. Briana Street for 30 Ls broke again after two months with the same fault:(
15.Reinis  2012-08-14 15:35:03
Thanks, I just need to fix the old kit lens. I'll try to put it in order.
14.Kaspars  2012-06-08 22:10:45
They fixed my Sigma 70-200 f2.8 on Briana Street 12 - the lens looked almost the same as in the picture at the beginning, just not quite so terrible. They fixed it quickly - it was ready after 4 days.
13.Jānis  2012-05-14 12:17:35
For my Nikon D7000 with a broken shutter they offered to replace for 467 Ls + Elkor intermediary services... to the question why I should pay almost as much for the shutter as for a new camera, they just said that they will also replace the matrix (didn't really understand why...) and some other stuff will be done... The shutter broke at 17,000. It almost seems like it's beneficial for Nikon not to fix anything so people buy new ones...
12.Pluume  2012-04-17 21:43:15
My lens has been at BNG service for already half a year, it looks identical to the photo in the article... Should remind them every 2 weeks... Other things though they fix quickly and well!
11.Tenisd  2012-04-13 14:35:51
I have only been to the Canon Official Service Center, and my feedback is very good. They always told me in advance how long it would take and stuff.
They repaired a 430EX flash that had fallen to the ground 3 times and for which only the TTL functions still worked (manual mode was off) for 60Ls, and they also gave a 2-month warranty on the repair.
10.Dainis  2012-04-12 21:19:01
From my experience, it is a workshop like a workshop, but very constructive, precise hands-on people. They brought the camera back from the grave in a single day. If you need a Nikon repaired, this is the right person...
Ivars Vibe!!!
Thanks.
9.Elmars  2012-03-28 19:03:18
For cameras at Zipenes the burnt out lamps are replaced by MDfoto electronics.. The price was good. For Galina, they tried to adjust the Sigma, said it wasn't possible, adjusted the Canon glass perfectly. No complaints, if something else breaks I'll bring it to her...
8.Arnis  2012-03-11 23:31:29
At Aristida Briana 12 they fixed a dropped Sigma 150-500 with a detached bayonet part and AF connector. Fast and excellent.
The attitude was nice too.
7.Dainis  2012-03-10 13:38:51
I didn't know at all that for Nikon the shutter replacement ends up so expensive and there's absolutely nothing to do about it with masters. At Canon center for a 4500Ls worth camera they quoted 250Ls for shutter replacement (that was probably last year).
6.Martins  2012-03-09 22:31:29
Ragana, I take it to the Baltic service center, no one else has access to original parts, sending from ebay or from some mysterious place of unknown origin doesn't seem like a particularly smart idea. Of course the price now has definitely changed, it's been some time. Could name the freshest one right away when there's an answer from the service.
5.ingus  2012-03-09 21:43:03
On Briana Street I had an old flash repaired; they fixed it quickly. At Ilgvars's place on Barona Street I had medium-format backs repaired, and the master himself emphasized that he works very slowly because he is lazy. Accordingly, the backs took about a month.
4.nauris  2012-03-09 13:52:43
as far as I know there's some master also for those who have a shop/consignment shop at Lachplesha street near the former cinema52. I once had a medium format film camera repaired, it was ok. but that was a few years ago
3.Ragana  2012-03-09 13:49:30
Martin, where did you send yours?
2.Martins  2012-03-09 12:14:41
Andre which camera did you replace the shutter for? Just sent my D3 for the second time for a new shutter, last time it was 460Lvl for the shutter and all the rubber.
1.oskars  2012-03-08 20:30:14
At Aristida Briana Street 12 they fixed a 50mm f1.4 whose thread had been bent; no complaints. The only thing I would not agree with is the comment that the "workshop is very tidy", but then again I am not the one who has to work there.
