Protect Your Vision

Since I do the processing myself, I often spend even 14-16 hours a day at the computer processing photos. But this time it won't be an article about photo processing, but about vision! Sharpness is needed not only for lenses and cameras, but also for us and our eyes.

Blueberries

Maybe someone remembers what grandmothers said, that you should eat a lot of blueberries in summer to strengthen health and vision. Bullseye! Go to the pharmacy and what do we see? There are various vitamin complexes specifically for vision and eyes, which are based on blueberry extract and other good things.
There are blueberry extracts available in various forms and doses, and also blueberry extract with vitamins that are necessary for vision.

Doctors Say

My great eye doctor says it's better to eat your fill of blueberries in summer, but when they're not available then for about 3 months drink a vitamin complex with blueberry extract and then switch to fish oil and then again eat fresh blueberries in summer. But I don't listen to doctors, I drink fish oil capsules all year round, both directly and vision and eye vitamin formula, because I consider my eyes have quite a heavy load.
From my experience I can say it really helps. If I don't drink anything from this, after 8-10 hours of processing at the computer my eyes bulge out, but using some of these preparations, moral or creative fatigue comes faster than visual fatigue.

Invest in Vision!

There are two paths. Economic or "full program".
Economic means buying only fish oil or some cheaper blueberry extract. Fish oil costs on average 2-3 Ls per month. I buy FUTURA Fish Oil 1000, which has 120 capsules (1g fish oil in each capsule). Costs ~9 Ls. For the economic variant you can find something cheaper, where the capsule has a smaller fish oil dose ;).
The second good thing is blueberry extract, which is cheaper at ~2 Ls per month. But I choose to take blueberry extract with eye vitamins. Those are more expensive at ~5 Ls per month. I use Natur Pharma Eye formula for vision and eyes 60 capsules. Should drink one capsule per day.
As I mentioned there are two paths depending on how much load on the eyes. Either drink one of the remedies or all at once and all year round :). I choose the second!
Also recommended and use special eye drops, because sitting at the computer they get dried out or become dry, and for them to function well they need to be wet, therefore after prolonged sitting some drops of special liquid improve the eye's well-being. There are also many exercises specifically for eyes and definitely at least once an hour you need to look away from the computer and look at what's happening outside the window. Maybe something interesting is happening out there worth grabbing the camera and going outside for fresh air! ;)

What Do Eyes Need?

What active components should be in eye vitamins and what functions do these compounds perform?
Lutein - it is the main pigment of the retina, also called the "yellow spot", which is responsible for high visual acuity. That's why with lutein deficiency a person's visual acuity worsens. Lutein protects eye tissues from premature aging and tissue decay, which intensifies when exposed to harmful computer radiation. Lutein protects eyes from UV rays by neutralizing their destructive effect on eyes, acting as an antioxidant. It's important to remember that with prolonged lutein deficiency, a person's visual acuity deteriorates irreversibly, therefore it's important to take it timely for prevention.
Blueberry extract - it is very popular and long-used natural remedy for maintaining visual acuity. Blueberry extract contains many important biologically active substances - bioflavonoids, anthocyanosides. Thanks to blueberry extract's rich composition, it strengthens eye capillaries, improves eye blood supply processes and nourishment processes, which are necessary for normal eye metabolism. Thanks to blueberry extract, the pigment rhodopsin regenerates better, which is responsible for the eye's ability to adapt to various lighting conditions and provides better vision in the dark.
Beta-carotene and Vitamin A - from one beta-carotene molecule two Vitamin A molecules are formed. Vitamin A improves color perception, protects eyes from excessive ultraviolet and computer radiation. Participates in the synthesis of the most important substances for eyes.
Zinc - a trace element that promotes maintenance of Vitamin A levels and participates in protein molecule synthesis processes.
Bilberry extract - recently this extract has been appearing more in eye vitamin formulas. Thanks to such composition, bilberry extract works against inflammation, removes eye redness and fatigue, sensation of soreness in eyes, improves eyeball nourishment and maintains visual acuity. It can also be used in cases of conjunctivitis.
Ginkgo biloba extract - this extract is better known as a preparation for improving memory, however it plays a very big role in eye metabolism processes. For all regenerative processes in eyes to happen better, the body needs more active synthesis of those substances that participate in eye metabolism processes. And Ginkgo biloba extract best promotes this, which improves eye capillary microcirculation, retinal blood supply. Thanks to the extract's richer composition, it also acts as an antioxidant and participates in fighting harmful UV and computer radiation.
Other vitamins and ingredients can also be in eye vitamin formulas. They only enhance the action of all aforementioned components and improve eye well-being and vision condition. Eye vitamin formulas are especially recommended for people who work at computers for prolonged periods and also for elderly people. These people have the highest demand for vitamins for their eyes, therefore to maintain vision quality longer, you should take eye vitamin formulas, which are now widely available in pharmacies.

What Would You Be Without Vision...

This is not some advertising article or product promotion. It is a recommendation from me to those who spend a lot of time straining their vision at the computer, camera, jewelers, seamstresses and many others whose main earning instrument is eyes. What would you be now without vision?

About blueberries, that they improve vision acuity, is 100% true (personal experience), no matter what American doctors, theorists write that it's not proven etc. How about those products - I really don't know, if I could somehow find out the truth.... I'm writing so that you wouldn't popularize those MOISTURIZING EYE DROPS - they are not that harmless! There are side effects - to the eyes, and scary!!! Better then rinse eyes with some teas...

also recommend air humidifier. especially in winter. also helps keep air and eyes more moist.

Andrej, thank you for the article. All respect! You have compiled great summary material for those who work on their vision. Photographers, artists, precision workers, watchmakers and also computer users, it's relevant for all. I'll also get into it - vision acuity, dry eyes, at the computer daily 8-16h, sometimes more. Start seeing double, the eye seems unable to focus - like camera autofocus - drives back and forth, but the image is blurry. That's terrible, especially if work is based on vision. The doctor sort of said everything is normal more or less, but I'm not getting better from that, prescribed pills for circulation improvement, but I'll probably take the one mentioned in the article - (blueberry extract I've already been using for a month) fish oil, something else. Yeah, it's true that with loads vitamins are consumed faster in the body, for 4 months now my load is regular - every day, and I feel it. Prevention, prevention, prevention! Before it's too late. Let everyone have bright and sharp vision!

To Mr.Lynx If you had read it, then you'd have some connection to all this. The author was writing - processing images takes very long hours at the computer, which damages vision - that's the connection!!! It doesn't bother you but I want to correct you - these are not any junk but useful things. Fish oil is generally very useful not only for vision but for the whole body. Look it up if you're not too lazy:-)

Author! Are you by any chance working for one of those supplement distribution networks? What's the connection of all this blueberry compote and chemical advertising with photo?

To DMG From my experience I can say that it really helps, because I wear glasses and my doctor couldn't precisely determine the needed vision parameters because they were simply "walking" due to vision fatigue. After a month of fish oil and bilberry tablets the doctor read the vision parameters in a couple of minutes and I got new glasses - so not only the vision muscles are to blame but also other vision function parameters are involved. Thanks for the article!

About blueberries completely true. As a kid somehow managed to eat them both summers and also in winter as compote, as a result developed very good vision which I now use well. About those extracts I really don't know because I prefer to give better to compotes, preserves, juices and something more natural, not in dry capsule form. The only thing you can't really buy anything from fresh blueberries in Latvia. Managed to visit Sweden and there bilberries are available - accordingly I bought preserves.

You're just dumb :D
7.Janbo  2009-12-30 03:09:02
Don't you already have glasses? But well the article is good!
6.gatis  2009-12-10 11:39:00
Eh, for me it's already too late. If only it doesn't get much worse. I was thinking to get blueberry extract.
5.reynys  2009-12-09 20:24:23
which pharmacy can I buy that eye formula? currently I use a blueberry extract that needs to be taken 3x a day, and that's not especially convenient...
4.Billy  2009-12-09 09:08:39
Normally you've figured it out...
3.ebw  2009-12-08 16:18:19
calcium is also good for eyes - my eye doctor recommended to use oyster calcium in capsules.
2.andreart  2009-12-08 16:12:47
when I didn't use vitamins for several years my vision got worse with active loads. in the last two years the load doubled and vision didn't worsen. and maybe you didn't read till the end, I mentioned that even with myopia at big loads there is a noticeable difference in fatigue.
1.DMG  2009-12-08 16:01:13
Author what can you say from your experience about any of these supplements? Is there any example from life that vision got worse, fixed it all and got good again? Probably not. Naively hoping that if you drink all that, then vision won't worsen! It will worsen because of the fact that eyes are not moved and eye muscles atrophy and the only way to prevent bad vision is not to stare at one point for hours. So drink as much as you want and waste money on all that, but vision won't get better from that really. It's the same as hoping that drinking some expensive stuff will grow muscles in your arms. Might as well lie in bed, drink expensive stuff and grow muscles.
